“We lose ourselves in books, we find ourselves there too”
Spiritual Life
“Spiritual Man”
by Watchman Nee
This book has shaped my understanding of our relationship with God more than any other. We are spirit, soul, and body. Understanding the distinction and interconnection unlocks a world of understanding vital for the Christian Life.
“Fathered by God”
by John Eldridge
There are certain books that you come across that give you language for something you’ve been searching for a lifetime. This book breaks down the developmental stages from boyhood to manhood. Fathered by God is a creative analysis of the phases that lead to rites of passages for every man.
“The Divine Romance”
by Gene Edwards
I’ve never read a book that encapsulates the divine story of the Bible from beginning to end in such an artistic, engaging, and heartfelt way. This book gave me the “heart-understanding” that I needed to understand what God’s love was really all about.
“Covenant Relationships”
by Asher Intrater
This book is so much more than a book on relationships. Relationships yes, because it is at the core of our existence, however this book unpacked for me a deeper understanding of what covenant actually is and what it means to be a new covenant people. A must read for every believer.
“The Sabbath”
by Abraham Joshua Heschel
A Jewish Rabbi and thought-leader who’s writing is beyond riveting. The understanding of Sabbath unlocks a greater realm of understanding of the character and nature of God. Time was the first thing in all of creation called “holy”. A must read.
“When Heaven Invades Earth”
by Bill Johnson
Walking in power is not relegated to “special” Christians but was meant for the everyday believer. I remember reading this in college and getting marked by a reality to see God’s kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. The supernatural life should be natural for the everyday believer.
“After God’s Own Heart”
by Mike Bickle
Life boils down to One Thing. To know the Lord. This book transformed the way that I looked at intimacy with the Lord. A study into the life of David revealed why God wrote about him more than any other figure in the Bible (besides Jesus).
“Life Together”
by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The Christian life is not an individual one but is communal, reflecting the image of God. I remember reading Life Together in my early twenties and getting marked by a message of what Christian community can look like in our modern context.
“Knowledge of the Holy”
by A.W. Tozer
Few books are such that every page seems to be dripping with holy oil that has been cultivated in the life of the author so authentically. That was how I felt reading this. Every page is a fresh revelation of the character and nature of God.
